Since Australia has been isolated from other continents for millions of years, most of  flora and fauna (kangaroos, koala bear, emus) are unique to Australia. Millions of  tourists come to Australia every year to see the wildlife and visit  its beaches. Tourism is one of  the fastest growing industries. Some of  the major tourist attractions are:

1. Great Ocean Road and the Victorian Gold Rush towns - Bendigo, Ballarat

2.Alice Springs and the opal mines, where people live underground to remain cool

3. Noosa has a national park and beaches

4. Fraser island is the largest sand island in the world. Tourists can camp there

5. Airlie beach, through swimming is not allowed due to sharks

6. Ayers Rock (Uluru) is a natural monolith.

Australia is the biggest island on the planet Earth. It was discovered by Captain Cook. The British sent more than 160,000 convicts to Australia by 1870, and the largest cities in Australia grew around these penal settlements. Like North America, many of  the native inhabitants of  Australia were killed by the settlers.

Canberra is  the capital of  Australia, though Sydney is the largest city. However, staying in Sydney can be expensive. Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart are other major cities.
